5-Year-Old Ejected From Car After Distracted Driving Crash

A five-year-old boy is fighting for his life after he was ejected from his mother's truck following a violent crash on Highway 1 in California. Police said that the 40-year-old woman was using her cell phone when she crashed her Toyota Tacoma into the center divider causing it to roll over multiple times.

"It was an absolutely awful, traumatic scene," California Highway Patrol Officer Sam Courtney told KSBW. "As soon as the truck started rolling, he came out of the truck."

Officials explained that the young boy should have been in a car seat, but was just restrained with a seatbelt. When investigators examined the car they found the boy's seatbelt was still fastened.

"Don’t assume a seatbelt will restrain a child who is not at least 4’9”!" CHP warned parents in a Facebook post. "Tragically this child could have been uninjured if he were in the proper seat."

The child suffered major injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center while his mother suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police said they are considering filing criminal charges against the unidentified woman.
